Creating Art from Molten Glass and Wood: Unique Art by Slagerman and Fishman
Creating Art from Molten Glass and Wood: Unique Art...
Artists Scott Slagerman and Jim Fishman create breathtaking objects from molten glass and fallen trees. Together, they work on abstract forms that combine warm natural wood with vivid translucent glass tones. In all the sculptures, a piece of tree becomes a sort of vase for the glass, which fits perfectly into the U-shaped crevice. It looks as if these two different materials occur naturally in the wild.
Slagerman and Fishman call the collection Wood & Glass. The name may be simple, but the result is a triumph of craftsmanship. This art requires extensive knowledge of woodworking and glassblowing. To create a sculpture, a design is first drawn on the wood, and then a U-shaped section is cut out of it. Next, molten glass is blown into the empty space, following its curves.
Slagerman specializes in glassmaking and is one of the artists behind these dazzling glass and wood sculptures. He says that the very nature of glass is what caught his interest many years ago. "I'm fascinated by how glass transforms from a brittle but solid state into a molten liquid and back again," he writes, "and how this changeable material can create objects through a process that is both gentle and dangerous."
