Make Your Own: Ceramic Mugs with a “Drippy” Rainbow Glaze

How to Make Ceramic Mugs with a Rainbow Effect

Philadelphia-based ceramic artist Brian Giniewski creates rainbow pots and vases that look like they’ve been drizzled with sweet icing.

He first began exploring this creative art on weekends while teaching art at a university. After six years, Giniewski decided to turn his passion into a full-time job and started a business with his wife, Krista, in May 2016.

With the goal of making “original ceramic vessels that make people happy,” Giniewski created “drippy” glazes for ceramic vases, contrasting with the grainy, matte clay base in different colors. From pastel shades to marbled and speckled patterns. Each piece comes out of the kiln completely unique because of the flowing nature of the glaze.

After working for nearly a year in a small studio in Port Richmond, Philadelphia, he needed to expand his studio. After a successful campaign, Giniewski was able to move into a factory building with better equipment and get back to creating productively.

Giniewski’s vessels are kiln-fired with glaze, so they can be used for food and drinks. You can add colorful decorations to a finished mug at home with ceramic and porcelain paints from our selection, which are baked in a conventional oven. However, according to the manufacturers, painted areas must not come into contact with food or drinks, so decorate the outside and stay clear of the rim that touches your lips.

Another interesting effect you can create on ceramics is the so-called ebru technique. Create it by dripping Magic Marble paints onto water, shaping a pattern, then dipping a mug or bowl into it.
